He posted: “We are safe and sound!”

The cause of the accident is not yet known.

The Vice-President’s Spokesman Laolu Akande said he was continuing his engagements in Kogi state.

“VP Osinbajo’s chopper crash lands in Kabba, but he and the entire crew safe,” the spokesman tweeted.

He later later said the vice president told a crowd that “we are extremely grateful to the Lord for preserving our lives.”

Mr Akande gave no further details on the crash but he thanked God and the flight crew.

Rival presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar told Mr Osinbajo he was “happy to note” that everyone was safe.

It is the second time Mr Osinbajo’s helicopter has crash-landed.

In June 2017, he survived a similar accident when the chopper he was traveling in crash-landed shortly after take off in Gwagawalada, Abuja.

Nigeria’s airlines are plagued by problems, with delays, cancellations and fuel shortages almost expected from domestic passengers.

But safety records have been improving in recent years.

Political party candidates have been campaigning across Nigeria.

They are mapping out to market their plans on how they intend to lead one of Africa’s top economies over the next four years.

Corruption, security and the economy are key issues in this year’s general election.

Buhari hopes his anti-corruption agenda can win him a second term in office.

But opposition candidate Atiku Abubakar vowed to consider an amnesty for corruption suspects and privatise the state-owned oil company NNPC.
