Afternoon tea was served by local pupils as they launched their own brand of the drink - Cardinal Tea. The pupils of Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School and Language College, Potters Green, were finally able to sample the taste of success after months of hard work. Pupils also designed and produced their own reusable bags which will be sold alongside the tea to raise money for charitable projects in Malawi. The launch event at the Oak Tree Conference Centre, in Binley, comes after the pupils took part in the Young Chamber programme in which schools work closely with the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce to learn about and gain first-hand experience of business and the processes behind it. Friends, family and fellow Chamber members were welcomed to join the tasting of the charitable cuppa giving them the chance to learn more about the process the young entrepreneurs went through, from learning the process of tea making, selecting the desired blend, and designing a box to contain the tea. The boxes of 50 tea bags will retail at £2.49 while the ‘bags for life’ will sell at £1.50. Both products will be available directly from the school and the tea will also be available in selected Spar stores. The school has worked closely with A F Blakemore and Sons and Aroma Tea and Coffee on the tea project, along with Pyramid Design on the Bag for Life Project. The Oak Tree Conference Centre has sponsored the pupils’ work. Lesley McCall, from the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “We are proud to have been involved in this event and to have watched the project grow. “The quality of the final products shows just how much effort the pupils have put in and I hope they are very proud of themselves. “We are delighted to be able to support young people’s skills and hopefully projects like this will boost their confidence and help to develop valuable business skills. “I wish the project the best of luck, and we look forward to the school’s future involvement in the Young Chamber programme.” The projects in Malawi which will benefit from the project include a school building scheme, the provision of medical supplies and a feeding programme for malnourished children. Helen Knight, head teacher at Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School and Language College, said: “The launch event was brilliant. It was the outcome of a lot of hard work by students in partnership with the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce. “We are very grateful to Fiona Hawkins and her team at Oak Tree Conference Centre for their generous sponsorship and support of the event. “I am actually overwhelmed that in a comparatively short period of time we can say as a school we are producing our own tea and bags for life. “It’s all down to the quality of the students here at Cardinal Wiseman, and the time the Chamber has been prepared to give us to help develop young people’s skills.” For more information about the Young Chamber programme contact Lesley McCall on 02476 654321 or email lesleym@cw-chamber.co.uk.
