A young person from Wood End, Coventry is rallying support ahead of a special journey. Kieran Armour, 19, works as a volunteer peer mentor with the Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire Partnership (CSWP) information and advice service, Connexions and has been offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend ten weeks in Kerala, India, by youth and education charity Raleigh International. But before he can jet off, the Wood End teenager must raise the money to pay for his trip. He said: “I need around £550-£600 for my flights and I also require a number of injections which cost £135 each, so I have set a target of £1,000 to £1,500 in total. “All the staff at Connexions are doing their best to help me raise the money and I have arranged a couple of fundraising events too. “I will be dressing up as Santa and running errands at Moathouse Leisure and Neighbourhood Centre in exchange for donations as well as arranging a disco for some local youngsters I have been working with. “If I get enough to go to India, activities will include trekking through the jungle, taking part in environmental projects, teaching children and helping local people by getting them water and building fences to keep out dangerous animals.” Kieran has been working alongside NDC Connexions personal advisers Terry Angus and Linda Stevenson-Smith for around six months. And they feel he is more than deserving of this fantastic opportunity. “Kieran is a lovely young man who has really come on leaps and bounds over the last few months and it would be wonderful if he could raise enough funds to go abroad,” said Linda. “Before being given this opportunity he first had to attend a week-long residential camp in Derbyshire where candidates undertake tasks and go on expeditions to be judged on their ability to work as part of a team and follow instructions. “This is done to find out whether they can cope with the situations they will face as part of the project, which involves working with people from other countries as well as the locals. “We are not surprised Kieran made it through because he is great with people and is actually hoping this experience will help him to make a career in youth work once he returns.” For more information on Kieran’s fundraising events, or the services offered by Connexions call 02476 604845 or contact Terry on 07736 112426.
