Press Release: Rugby joins Coventry and Warwickshire 2012 Partnership

Support for the region’s Olympic ambitions has gained another valuable boost after Rugby Borough Council pledged its support to the Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership for the 2012 Games.
Rugby Borough Council is the latest in a string of high-profile organisations to officially join the Partnership which is a unique combination of private, public and voluntary organisations working together to maximise the opportunities for the region surrounding the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Tom Clift, Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership manager for the 2012 Games, said: “Our aim has always been to involve the key organisations across the sub-region to ensure that Coventry and Warwickshire derives real benefits before, during and after the Games.
“We are delighted to welcome Rugby Borough Council to our 2012 Partnership and we are looking forward to working closely with them on their 2012 priorities as we countdown to welcoming the world in just over two years time.”
Rugby Borough Council joins Coventry City Council, Warwickshire County Council, NHS Coventry, University of Warwick, Coventry University and CV One as a funding partner.
Hosted by the Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire Partnership (CSWP) the Partnership is also supported by Coventry Sports Foundation, CSW Sport and the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce.
Caroline Johnson, community sport and recreation manager for Rugby Borough Council, said: “We are excited to be involved in this Partnership.
“The Olympics will be fantastic not just for London, but for the whole of the country and Rugby will now be at the centre of this region’s plans in two years time.
“As a town Rugby has strong historic links with the Olympics, as the founder of the movement, Baron Pierre de Coubertin visited Rugby School where he was inspired to found the modern Olympics.
“We see this as a great opportunity to encourage the borough’s residents to participate in a range of sporting and cultural events as well as putting Rugby on the tourism map for visitors to England in the summer of 2012.”
The Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership for the 2012 Games has already achieved a number of successes for the region including the acquisition of a 2012 Live Site, which will see a big screen installed in the region to act as the destination for news, events and live screenings of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.
The C&W 2012 Partnership is also in the midst of delivering six flagship projects including the Festival of Sport, which will see up to 12,000 local youngsters experience Olympic and Paralympic sports.
