Press Release: Rugby business leaders to speak out at Chamber event

Business leaders in Rugby have been encouraged to speak out about two of the biggest decisions in the town’s recent history.

On Thursday, June 25, the Rugby Branch of the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce will meet planners to have their say on the future of the former radio mast site near the A5.

The following day they will meet Rugby MP Jeremy Wright to lobby for changes to the proposed redevelopment plans for the Catthorpe Interchange where the M1 meets the M6 and the A14.

The issues were raised as about 30 business leaders from the area attended a meeting of the Chamber’s Rugby Branch at the Merchant’s Inn in Little Church Street, Rugby.

Simon Leech, chairman of the Rugby Branch of the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “It is important that businesses in the region have the opportunity to have their say on how the town develops in the future.

“The future of the Rugby mast site will have a huge bearing on business in the town so it is crucial that we give our opinions and make sure we reach conclusions that suit everyone.”

Public consultations on plans for the mast site will be held on June 27 and 28, with the outcomes expected to be revealed on June 29.

Chamber members have arranged the meeting with Wright after the Government announced that they would be taking the cheapest option over the redevelopment of the Catthorpe Interchange accident black spot.

Leech said: “The transport networks are the arteries of our town, feeding the lifeblood of our economy - trade and industry - into the heart of Rugby.

“The new proposals for the junction do not allow movement in all directions and, if these routes are cut-off, the town will suffer and the consequences could be disastrous.

“We are not prepared to standby and let that happen and we will be pushing very hard on this issue and would encourage any Chamber members who want to have their say to get in contact with us.”
