The £113 million Ricoh Arena has been named as runner-up in the Venue of the Year Category at the inaugural international Stadium Business Awards.Espanyol’s new Stadium in Barcelona narrowly pipped the Ricoh Arena in Coventry to the top prize during the awards ceremony in Dublin, Ireland. However, the Ricoh Arena did finish ahead of London’s Twickenham Stadium and The O2 as well as Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, USA and the Donbass Arena, in Ukraine. There was a strong showing from the Ricoh Arena on the nominations front as the complex was also named in the Creativity category and the Arena’s marketing director, Liz Cooper, made the shortlisted final three for the Team Player of the Year Award. The awards are designed to recognise leadership, innovation and achievement in the delivery, operation and management of sports facilities globally.Liz Cooper was in attendance to represent the Ricoh Arena along with Daniel Gidney, chief executive of the Ricoh Arena, Jacky Isaac, human resources director, John Street, financial controller, and Anthony Mundy, facilities director.Speaking after the event at the Guinness Storehouse, Gidney said: “To have been nominated in three separate categories at an awards ceremony of this calibre is a tremendous honour in itself and a fantastic endorsement of the quality of the complex and the team behind the Ricoh Arena.“When you look at the standard of the nominees in each category it really underlines just how far our magnificent venue has come since it was built just five years ago.“To be mentioned in the same breath as venues such as The O2 and Twickenham, and then finish above them at an awards ceremony, is a great credit to everyone who has worked so hard to make the Ricoh Arena the success it is today.”
