A group of secondary school pupils were bowled over by a big screen experience after being invited to test out Coventry’s London 2012 Live Site. Around 20 youngsters from Sidney Stringer Academy were invited to take part in the first interactive event using the big screen at the Live Site, situated in Millennium Place in the city centre. The pupils got into the swing of things by testing out the Slogger cricket game – one of a selection of pre-installed games available on the screen which uses sensors to pick up players’ movements. Interactive games will feature as part of events around the Live Site. Live Sites are big screens and events spaces in urban centres which offer live information, video news and community events. They will also be the destination for news, events and live screenings of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. Working with the BBC and London 2012, Coventry has joined the UK-wide Live Site network which currently has 20 screens up and running in cities across the country. A wide range of events and celebrations will take place at the Live Site between now and London 2012 all aiming to inspire people through the power of the Games. Will Bastin, project officer 2012 Games at Coventry City Council, said: “The interactive element is just one function which this screen can deliver. “With the event space in Millennium Place, there is a huge potential for a wide variety of activities to take place that utilise the screen to enhance what is happening in front of it. “The Live Site is another way for local people to be part of London 2012 through participating at events in Millennium Place, watching live sport on the screen and making their own videos to be featured on the big screen. “During the 2012 Games the Live Site will also offer an amazing opportunity for local people to experience the atmosphere of the London 2012 by watching the Olympic Games live on the big screen with hundreds of other people.” To find out more about how Coventry is getting involved in London 2012 visit www.coventry.gov.uk/london2012 ENDS
