Press Release: Olympic and Paralympic competitors learn their roles as 2012 ambassadors

Olympic and Paralympic competitors - past and present – are set to play a pivotal role in delivering the inspiration of the London 2012 Games to the region.

Almost 20 Olympic and Paralympic legends attended the launch event at Coventry Transport Museum to learn what they can do in their roles as 2012 ambassadors over the next three years.

Among those attending the event, which was been organised by the Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership for the 2012 Games, was Coventry’s Bill Adcocks, who ran the marathon at the 1968 Mexico Olympics and bowler Rita Thompson, who competed at the 1980 and 1984 Paralympics, taking home two gold, two silver and a bronze medal.

The evening included an informal buffet and drinks reception, followed by a presentation from the C&W 2012 Partnership’s lead ambassador, David Moorcroft.

Will Bastin, partnership assistant for the Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership for the 2012 Games, said: “We are delighted to recognise and celebrate our Olympic and Paralympic heritage from former and current world class athletes.

“The evening was a great success and to have so many of the region’s legendry Olympic and Paralympic athletes under one roof was a first ever for Coventry and Warwickshire.

“We hope that by inviting the legends to this event we have successfully introduced them to the work of the 2012 partnership and the concept of playing a role as an inspiration for the next generation of Coventry and Warwickshire athletes and the rest of the community.”
