Press Release: Montreal To Host a Blue Jazz Festival With A Green Difference

Music legend, Stevie Wonder will open this year’s Montreal International Jazz Festival with a ‘free-show’ on 30th June. The festival is one of cities busiest outdoor spectacles and welcomes visitors from around the globe. More than 2 million revellers are predicted to descend upon the Quartier de Spectacles site of the Jazz Festival to enjoy the anchor of the summer season.

But it's not all about the music, the Jazz Fest has played a lead role in the events sector by recovering on-site waste since 1989. Year after year, some 20 tons of recyclable materials are recovered on the Festival site and this year the site is to be trialled with the latest in vacuuming technology.

The innovative clean up system will be the first in North America to replace all public bins on the festival site with underground waste pipes and will keep festival litter to a minimum proving Montreal’s commitment to keeping the city green.

In previous years the site has been transformed from a green paradise to a rubbish tip as festival goers and travellers visited the attraction. The new initiative hopes to reduce the number of volunteers required to tidy up the site during the most popular spell of the year.

Montréal will also benefit from the environmental advantages the wastepipe system will make as the new system relies on electricity rather than fossil fuels to power its 90kph suction machines. The cost of burning fossil fuels are increasing at a rapid rate and make far more of an impact on the environment. Most importantly the rubbish collection system will also benefit residents and local businesses as they will be able to save tons of waste from landfills each year.
