Press Release: Leading Expert gives talk on dyslexia |
|
A leading expert in dyslexia will be giving a talk about the subject in Coventry next month. John Stein, Professor of Neurophysiology at Oxford University, will be discussing ‘Wobbles, warbles and fish – the brain basis of dyslexia’ on Tuesday, February 9 at 6.45pm at the Alan Higgs Centre in Allard Way. He has been invited to talk to those with dyslexia, parents whose children have the learning disorder and members of the teaching profession by the Coventry and Warwickshire branch of nasen at its Spring Conference. Nasen is a UK organisation that promotes the development of children and young people with special educational needs and supports those who work with them. Linda Moorcroft from the Coventry and Warwickshire branch of nasen said Professor Stein – who is the brother of chef and television presenter Rick Stein – is renowned across the world for his studies of the brain. “This event will be of particular interest to school staff including teachers, learning mentors and teaching assistants as well as students with dyslexia, parents, carers and other professionals,” she said. “Professor Stein is internationally known for his studies of the brain which may explain many of the memory, sound and visual problems associated with dyslexia. “He will describe some genes that have been identified, the possible role of maternal antibodies and the benefits of colour overlays and fish oils. “Dyslexia is believed to affect ten per cent of children. Their problems range from complaining letters appear to move around, change places, blur or glare when they try to read or having hearing problems making it difficult to process word sounds or translate letters into sounds. “The talk will be of enormous benefit to those with dyslexia as well as their relatives and teachers.” Booking is essential and tickets costing £10 for nasen members and £15 for non-members are available from Pippa Richings by emailing senco@whitmorepark.org or for further information contact Sue on 024 7641 6106.
