A Midlands IT company has warned businesses of the dangers of not backing-up their files after saving ten years’ worth of data for a construction firm. Chris Roche, managing director of Coleshill-based Acutec, said the consequences of not keeping a back-up could be dire for companies. “No matter how much you say it, some businesses still don’t get the message,” he said. “But to have a disaster recovery mechanism for your files is absolutely crucial. “Only recently, a construction company client of ours suffered a flood which damaged their main server. It contained ten years’ worth of work including CAD files. “The cost would have been almost impossible to calculate but fortunately, just six months before, they had put a disaster recovery in place and it saved them. “In fact, they were not going to consider it until their insurance company pointed out that it might be difficult to recreate ten years’ worth of work! “But it’s very serious and actually most back-up and disaster recovery systems are relatively inexpensive and can be provided by your IT support company. “In this instance, they could have lost everything but within 48 hours they were back up and running as normal.” A variety of disaster recovery systems and back-ups exist including everything from physical back-up data tapes to off-site, ‘online’ back-ups. “It’s also imperative that if you have a system in place, that you use it and don’t allow backing-up to slip,” Chris added. “Our systems offer an offsite, secure back-up that doesn’t require a member of staff to remember to carry out the back-up process and means that a company’s life’s work is safe.” Media enquiries:Lee CordenAdvent Communications2 Edison BuildingElectric WharfSandy LaneCoventry CV1 4JATel: 024 7663 3636http://www.advent-communications.co.uk |
