Press Release: Future Midlands accountants supported by Spencer Gardner Dickins

The first “graduates” of a new scheme to encourage young local accountancy talent have passed the first major stage of their training.

Laura Donegan, 20, and Joe Merrick, 20, have just passed their Association of Accounting Technicians exams and they are now working towards their next qualifications with accountants and tax advisors Spencer Gardner Dickins.

Spencer Gardner Dickins, based in Coventry Innovation Village, was established five years ago by experienced professionals who had all left international companies to set up the firm – and the training scheme was put in place when the company was 12 months old.

The scheme, run in association with training organisation CWT, has been designed to help local school leavers establish a career in the profession underpinned with the relevant qualifications.

Paul Dickins, a partner in SGD, said: “When we established the firm, we wanted to create a pool of local talent not only to work here but also to ensure that the tradition of well trained young professionals from this area was maintained”.

“Laura and Joe fit our original vision perfectly. They are both young, able and extremely enthusiastic and it is great to think that they are now embarked on a very worthwhile career”.

The two have been joined by school leavers Melissa Richards and 16-year-old Jade Spencer, who has joined the firm as an apprentice. .

Karen Devany, of CWT, said: “We have worked very closely with Spencer Gardner Dickins on its training programme to ensure that the young people are well prepared for their roles at the company and for the exams they have to sit on their way to qualification.

“Once they have passed their Association of Accounting Technicians they move on to their Chartered Certified Chartered Accountants exams.

“It is a very good example of how a company can create a pipeline of talent and at the same time benefit local young people.”
