A Coventry primary school is on the way to becoming one of the sportiest in the city. Finham Primary School, in Green Lane, has been able to offer its children the chance to take part in numerous sports this academic year, including nine through a partnership with Coventry Sports Foundation. The arrangement means that the foundation’s sports development team visit the school four times a week to offer sports classes – such as rugby, football, street dance and cricket. More than 250 pupils at the school, from reception to Year 6, have taken part in the classes during and after school and headteacher Kay Brown, believes there will be ‘huge’ benefits as a result. “By making sure our pupils have the chance to take part in a wide variety of sports we are ensuring they have opportunities to take part in a great choice of activities while ensuring they receive important exercise,” Mrs Brown said. “Along with the mainstream sports such as football and rugby, we also have street dance, multi-skills and socatots for our youngest children. “It’s a way to introduce sports they may not have tried before while ensuring pupils receive the required amount of P.E, and it has gone fantastically well at Finham Primary. “The school and the children have embraced the sports and as a result we’re seeing kids get healthier and get more enjoyment from taking part in the various games.” The scheme, which has been rolled out to 36 other schools in Coventry, will play a key role in keeping young people engaged and inspired by sport, according to Wendy Jackson, Sports Development Manager of Coventry Sports Foundation. “We hear a lot in the media about how childhood obesity is on the increase and children are less active – but this is proof that children want to be engaged in sporting activity,” she said. “Finham Primary is also a great example of offering opportunities after school from reception and hopefully these children will have a positive experience and continue throughout primary school participating in these clubs. “The response we’ve had from the children at Finham has been fantastic, with many taking up new sports. But most importantly it engages and excites them to try new activities and makes sure we develop an active generation.” Ends Media enquiries:Dan DonovanAdvent Communications2 Edison BuildingElectric WharfSandy LaneCoventry CV1 4JATel: 024 7663 3636http://www.advent-communications.co.uk |
