The people of Coventry and Warwickshire are being encouraged to Open up this summer as the 2012 Games edge closer. The Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership for the 2012 Games is promoting the opportunity for organisations and communities to register to be part of Open Weekend 2010. Open Weekend, supported by BP, is an annual celebration of the countdown to London 2012 and this year’s event will take place between Friday July 23 and Sunday July 25. This year’s celebration will have a challenge theme and aims to encourage individuals and organisations to challenge themselves, try something new or take an existing skill to a new level. Over the past two years more than a million people have been involved in over 1,400 events across the UK. Last year the West Midlands hosted 40 events of which 12 were in Coventry and Warwickshire. Events in 2009 included a display of bicycle acrobatics in Leamington, a theatrical exploration of Physical Education and sport in University Square, Coventry and a storytelling session at St John’s House, in Warwick. Will Bastin, Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership assistant for the 2012 Games, said: “For the past two years London Open Weekend has given individuals and communities across Coventry and Warwickshire the chance to actively engage with the excitement around London 2012 and celebrate the imminent arrival of the Games. “Hopefully this summer we can stage even more events in our sub-region than previously and provide more people than ever with the opportunity to join us on our journey to 2012, making this years Open Weekend the biggest to date.” To meet the criteria for Open Weekend the event must be non-commercial and not-for-profit, have no commercial sponsorship or offer any similar marketing rights. The events should also reflect the core Olympic and Paralympic values of friendship, determination, equality, inspiration, courage, excellence and respect.
