Peddle power is helping to get people to work and beat pollution thanks to a travel scheme. The Coventry Green Scheme supports people in employment, education or training with hybrid bicycles, if they have difficulty reaching their destination via a suitable method of public or private transport. It is open to people who live in Coventry, have a travel distance that is achievable on a bicycle and do not suffer from a health condition which would affect their ability to cycle. The scheme is run by CSWP with support from Coventry City Council. So far over 20 people have expressed an interest in taking advantage of the scheme, including Mark Thomas. Mark knows better than most the wider benefits of adopting a greener form of travel after enrolling on a masters course on climate change and sustainable development at DeMontfort University, in Leicester. The former Warwick University student is currently on a six-month work placement at CSWP providing individual travel plans. He said: “I found out about the scheme after joining the sustainable travel solutions team on my placement. “I used to travel to work by bus which can take me over an hour, but during good weather it only takes 30 minutes on the new bike. It can be challenging to use buses for some journeys as they only go on set routes and often you will have to stop and change bus. “The new bike has really enhanced my travel possibilities and there are definite health benefits as well – I have previously lost half a stone in weight from cycling to work instead of taking the bus. “I would definitely recommend the scheme to other people, especially those looking for a more flexible travel option.” Once enrolled on the scheme applicants must pay a non-refundable deposit of £30 and then just £10 per month towards the upkeep of the bicycle, which includes servicing and normal wear and tear repairs.
