Press Release: Band Hatton sponsors Rowena Cole

Coventry’s Rowena Cole has been selected to represent Great Britain for the first time.

The 800-metre runner, aged 17, has been selected by UK Athletics to run for the GB junior team this Sunday (May 17) at the McCain Loughborough International Athletics meeting.

Cole, who is studying for A-Levels at Tile Hill Wood School, will face competition from Loughborough Students, GB Students, England, Scotland, and Wales in the match.

Cole is one of a select group of athletes selected for Dame Kelly Holmes’ ‘On Camp with Kelly’ training group and won the England Athletics’ Young Female Athlete of the Year in 2008.

In January, she received a major boost when Coventry solicitors Band Hatton agreed to provide her with funding to purchase better training equipment – and she is aiming to reach the European Junior Championships in Italy this summer.

Martin Rush, of UK Athletics, said: “With the European Junior Championships in a little over two months, the McCain Loughborough International forms an important performance stepping stone for athletes aiming for the Aviva GB and NI team.

“Coupled with next month’s Mannheim international – this fixture will give an early indication as to where athletes are in their preparations, and I wish them luck in what should be an exciting match on Sunday.”

Cole, of Godiva Harriers, is the only athlete from Coventry selected for the meet.

Mark Moseley, practice director of Band Hatton, said: “Rowena is a special talent who we are thrilled to support – she’s getting better all the time and it’s great to see her progress so strongly. We wish her all the best on Sunday.”
